ACT is a proven mindfulness technique that is used the world over.  ‘ACT will consciously bring awareness to your here-and-now experience with openness, interest and receptiveness.’

Many of the exercises in ACT have a meditative feel to them and some even bear strong similarities to mindfulness meditation practices however, ACT is not about meditation although, incorporating  meditation practices into your  day can prove very beneficial.

ACT aims to help you create a rich, full and meaningful life while accepting the painthat ineveitably comes with living.  The more you are likely to struggle with pain when it arises, the more you will suffer therefore, when practising the methods in ACT you will learn how to turn your struggle switch off and connect with the present moment.

The six core principles of ACT are;

  • Acceptance
  • Defusion
  • Contacting the present moment
  • The ‘Observing’ self
  • Values, and…….
  • Committed Action

Even though our standard of living is higher than ever before in recorded history, psychological suffering is all around us.  ACT maintains that the root of human suffering is human language itself.  It sets us up for struggle with our own thoughts and feelings.   When we try to get rid of, or avoid, unwanted thoughts or experiences we simply create extra suffering for ourselves.  For example, virtually every addiction known to mankind begins as an attempt to avoid or get rid of unwanted thoughts and feelings such as boredom, loneliness, anxiety, depression and so on.  The addictive behaviour provides a quick and easy way to get rid of cravings or withdrawal symptoms.  The more time and energy we spend on trying to get rid of unwanted private experiences the more we are likely to suffer psychologically.

Control is the problem, not the solution.

  • Why is it so hard to be happy?
  • Why is life so difficult?
  • Why do humans suffer so much?
  • And what can we realistically do about it?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has some profound and life changing answers to these questions.
