Hypnosis is a trance like state which is a completely natural state for us to enter and we actually experience trance like states about four times a day. For instance, have you ever got in your car to drive to your selected destination, whether it be your work place, a friends house or a shopping centre only to realise when you got there, that you could not remember the actual journey process? You couldn’t remember turning left onto Feelings Rd, or stopping at the lights on Dream Highway. Can you remember a time when you were so engrossed in a television program that you did not hear your partner asking you a question and what about the time you simply sat and stared at an object, totally lost in the moment. All these states are trance states and yet you were always in control. At any moment you could choose to break the trance and come back to so called ‘reality.’ This is hypnosis.
Hypnosis can be used in many ways to improve your quality of life whether it be quitting smoking, weight loss, insomnia or bad habits and it is a completely natural way to make suggestions to your subconscious mind that often your conscious mind will not remember. To bypass the critical faculty (conscious mind) it is vital to be in a relaxed hypnotic state (trance) which means that whilst in this state your conscious mind may still be thinking of what to cook for dinner however, your subconscious mind is taking in all that is being suggested.
If, for instance, your reason for hypnosis was to lose weight, then it may be suggested to your subconscious that you enjoy exercising or enjoy eating a healthy diet. Because the suggestions are not directed at your conscious mind, you may not be thinking about them constantly yet you will find yourself wanting to exercise and wanting to eat a healthy dinner and you will be able to integrate it into your day a lot more easily and effortlessly. Of course, with any therapy there will be some work for you to do before and after hypnosis to ensure you get the maximum results.
